The 1996 Nobel Prizes

What was striking about the 1996 Nobel laureates was the diversity of their achievements:  advances in medicine that are already saving lives, groundbreaking discoveries of new molecules and phenomena in chemistry and physics, practical applications of economic principles, the craft of a publicity-shy poet, and the efforts of two men to keep international focus on a longtime conflict. On the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, its laureates serve to remind us how important individual accomplishments are to the survival and betterment of all humanity.
