Report: Two women killed in Gaza

JERUSALEM -- Two women have died and four have been injured, one critically, during tank fire in Gaza, the Palestinian Red Crescent has said.

The women were sitting at home close to the Jewish settlement of Netzarim in Gaza on Saturday evening when the incident happened.

Some of the injured women were from the same family as the deceased, Reuters said.

The Israeli Army said it used three tanks and a helicopter to fire at an area north of the Jewish settlement of Netzarim. An army official said the shelling was in response to gunshots being fired at an army post near the settlement.

It did not immediately confirm the deaths.

The violence comes at a time when international diplomatic efforts to keep the fragile Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire are underway in the region.
